When Max Lenman found out his girlfriend (now fiancée) wanted to sell her 1996 Honda Accord, the filmmaker decided she could use a little help with the marketing- in the form of a car commercial that would put most agencies to shame.
Touted by the narrator as: “A car for people that have life figured out and just need a way to get somewhere.”, the commercial highlights all of the flaws, quirks, and idiosyncrasies that you might expect from a well-loved, 21-year-old Japanese family car.
The minute-long commercial chronicles the day of a sleep deprived driver, her cat, a pot of coffee, and an assortment of rubber duckies strewn across the rear hatch as the 1996 Honda Accord tackles the spectacular Seacliff switchbacks of Southern California.
Lenman’s fiancée Anne Marie Avey listed the car on eBay with a starting bid of $499- slightly above the Redbook value of $469. But after the video caught the attention of an international audience and shot past 3 million youtube views within two days, a bidding war erupted- sending the Accord’s price into six figures.
Unfortunately for Lanman, eBay’s fraud department- who weren’t privy to the viral success of accompanying video- took down the listing after it sailed past $150,000USD.
As of the time of writing, the auction has 5 days left with 65 registered bids and a current bid price of $4,200USD.
